Ms Emily S.Y., Lim
Emily Lim is an accredited dietitian and nutrition consultant, who is experienced in providing comprehensive advice in all aspects of nutrition and diet to promote health, preventative intervention, delay onset of diseases and disease management. A graduate from University of Putra Malaysia (Honours in Dietetics), she has been trained in various settings, which include clinical (in- and out-patient and ICU), foodservice and community services. Emily has served as an Outpatient Dietitian by providing one-on-one counselling to patients on a wide range of issues including weight management, vegetarian eating, gastrointestinal disorders, high in blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol. Her forte is to conduct practicum-based dietetics and nutrition programme for special needs children with conditions such as dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, Down Syndrome and global developmental delay. Hence, her active involvement in educating the community is indeed invaluable as we all know “we are what we eat” and the best form of education should always start from home. In 2010, she has been acknowledged as a member of Malaysia Dietetics’ Association (MDA).
Emily has a solid understanding of genetic concept that underlies the association between gene and nutrition. Each and every one of us is genetically unique, thus, one-size-fits-all approach is no longer applicable. Have you ever thought why different individual experiences different health outcome despite practising similar diet and comparable lifestyle? This particular question has been lingering in health professionals’ mind for decades and, indeed, we can no longer deny the pivotal role of our unique set of DNA in determining our general wellbeing from all aspects such as diet, vitamin & mineral metabolism, disease & cancer risks, physical performance etc. This highlights the necessary synergies between the genotyping and the systematic biology investigations of the metabolism deploying transcriptomics, proteomics, epigenomics and metabolomics, providing insight into how diet and health alter the expression of our genomes. Therefore, Emily strongly believes in nutrigenomic and utilizes genetic and biochemical risk factor profiles to develop individualized regime best suited for her clients.
“The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.” – Ann Wigmore.
The inter-connection among physical wellbeing, emotional health and dietary intake is the secret to optimum health. Her primary goal is to work closely with patients by equating their current body requirement, health status, personal preferences and eating habits in order to identify achievable and sustainable lifestyle adjustment.
As a dietitian and nutrition consultant, Emily pledges to devote her career to increase health awareness on nutrient-gene interactions and its impact on non-communicable diseases in Malaysia. As we all know, prevention is better than cure, she strives to provide her best as the progression of knowledge in this field promises a future revolution in preventative healthcare.
